Choose Your Adventure || Micah Estelle
This week, we're featuring Micah Estelle for the #chooseyouradventure project!
Photography for me is something that is changed how I see things. I now notice beautiful light and great scenery and instead of just thinking “wow that’s cool” - I think of ways I can document it to make this moment become a piece of art that could potentially last for years to come. It has brought me some of the greatest friends I have and has kept me out there finding that next shot and always striving to keep shooting. Photography for me is an addiction.
What initially inspired you to start skiing or snowboarding?
I started snowboarding in the 8th grade. My best friend’s dad was a sponsored ski racer as a kid and he really wanted to help us get up on the hill and see how rad it is. He helped us put together yard sales and found us yard work to do so that we could pay for our pass and gear. The season came and we were all ready - he drove us up as much as we wanted and told us to get out there and have fun. While we didn’t take after his racing we began to ride the terrain park more and more and make friends while we were doing it.
What inspired you to blend your photography skills with skiing or snowboarding?
Being in the mountains is simply inspiring for me. I feel like being up there looking over all below and being close to nature gives me this creativity that cannot be recreated. When I am up there I always am observing and see just all these great shots I want to get. It gets me motivated to get my camera up there and get the shot!
How do you want people to react to the photos you take?
I want people to be inspired by my photos. I want them to see one of my photos and plan a trip to get out there or frankly just get in the car in go. If there is one thing that I would wish for someone to take away from my photos is exposing them to the beauty of nature and the ease of access we have to it here in the pacific northwest.
Where were your Choose Your Own Adventure photos taken?
My Choose Your Own Adventure photos were taken at one of my favorite ski resorts, Schweitzer Mountain. I got the opportunity to go up with a couple good friends of mine to one of their condos and spend a weekend full of shred and photos.
Why did you choose to shoot at that location above all others?
I choose this location because I think it is a great meeting place for many people all around Idaho, Washington and Montana. Its a popular mountain which could lay some common ground for people viewing these photos.
What motivates you to get up, and get outside to adventure?
My motivation is rooted in my faith. I want to get out there and explore God’s creation. Getting out there and creating art with something that is already there, making your own interpretation of it, is just blissful in my opinion and can be such an awesome way to connect. Finding a new favorite spot, a new trail or just a new adventure sometimes is what you need to get away from the busyness of life.
